Visual inspections help identify a problem, but they remain limited when the issue needs to be quantified precisely. Two inspectors may describe the same defect differently, and it is often difficult to consistently estimate the depth of sagging or the elevation difference around a manhole.
The problem becomes even more significant at network scale. When hundreds or thousands of manholes need to be assessed, manual methods lack repeatability and make comparisons from one site to another more difficult.
The Manhole Measurement function extracts and analyzes information associated with manholes to measure the height difference between the manhole and the surrounding pavement. It also produces a map of the pavement around it, helping identify variations in height and, in particular, areas of sagging.
The new function adds several concrete outputs:
A 3D measurement can directly identify height differences between the manhole and the pavement surface, as well as deformation around the structure. This includes settlement or sagging areas that may not be properly described through a simple visual note.
For asset managers and pavement engineers, this information is useful for better documenting localized defects, supporting maintenance decisions, and prioritizing interventions where the impact on the pavement surface is most significant.
At network scale, localized defects around manholes are common, but they are often difficult to integrate into a systematic process. A structured, georeferenced output centered on each manhole makes technical review easier and helps ensure more consistent comparisons across different sites.
The extended XML format also provides a practical advantage: in addition to profiles, teams have access to usable point data for validation or targeted corrections when needed.
